Must follow these 15 Car Driving Safety Tips during Pregnancy:

  1. Fasten your seat belts: Pregnancy is not an excuse to avoid seat belts as it protects you and your baby. If the tummy is big, you can still wear the seat belt in a relaxed position. Try wearing the belt below your bump and across the upper thighs while the shoulder harness over your shoulder and between the breasts. Buckle Up Correctly: Seat belts protect lives. This is the essential fact that we are all aware of. So when there is a life growing inside of you it is just that you buckle up to support him or her. Seat belts hold you in position even in the tiniest of jerks keeping you and your baby inside of you safe. The right way to wear your seat belt during pregnancy is to keep the shoulder portion positioned above the collarbone that is between the arm and the neck. The lap portion should be kept as low as possible – preferably over the thigh. Never, never, never put the seat belt over or upon the baby bump. The shoulder strap should run across your chest but never across your back or your arm. Double check the lock of the seatbelts to make sure they are secure.
  2. Always be the passenger: As your pregnancy progresses your baby will grow more and more inside your tummy and your belly will increase in size. This is a fact that even a child knows. As your belly grows it will come closer and closer to the Car steering wheel and can be simply hurt even in the case of a minor accident. Excepting that you have no choice it is perfect that you always be the passenger during your pregnancy and refrain from taking the driver’s seat. Even if you easily HAVE to take the wheel then think twice about all the importance and try and keep people informed of your movements.
  3. Do not drive in the third trimester: You can drive in the earliest stages of pregnancy but it is good to avoid in the last few weeks. Even go in the car or sitting in the driver seat would be painful so it is advisable to take the back seat.
  4. Airbags are not a bad idea: If you fasten your seatbelts, airbags are nothing to worry about as they are designed to save you from accidents even if you are pregnant.
  5. Adjust the car seats: Adjusting your seat position while traveling in a car will help you overcome travel embarrassment. If you are driving, try to maintain at least 10 inches distance between you and the wheel. Also leave enough space for your legs to rest or change position, if you are in the passenger seat. Be sure to wear both the shoulder and lap belts, It is true that wearing the seat belt during pregnancy can lead to discomfort, but for the protection of your baby and yourself wear both the shoulder and the lap belts. This is the least you can do for the safety of both your baby and yourself.
  6. Keep your doctor on speed dial: It is never too much to keep your doctor on speed dial. Call him or her immediately in case you feel any kind of discomfort from your car journey. Be it a rough speed breaker or an embarrassment from the seat belts, let your doctor know. If you feel that a situation could have been even a slight bit detrimental to you or your baby’s health intimate your doctor immediately. Keeping your doctor on speed dial would also come in handy in case you have an actual accidental emergency.
  7. Keep the emergency bag ready: Prepare an emergency bag with your vitamins, necessary medications, and emergency contact numbers along with some cash to face any situation.
  8. Stack up your snacks: If you are planning on a long road trip, it is mandatory to stack your bag with healthy snacks and water. Do not forget to stop every 2 hours for rest and toilet breaks.
  9. Make a conscious effort to stay away from the steering wheel: If you under some unforeseen circumstances do have to get behind the wheels make sure you always maintain a safe distance from the Car steering wheel and your baby bump. Maintain at least 10 inches of gap between you and the Car steering wheel. When you feel that you are comfortably seated then make sure to tilt the Car steering away from your belly and towards your breastbone. Push back your seat as far as comfortable to increase the distance between your bump and the wheel.
  10. Do not travel for a longer time: Limit your driving period and do not travel for more than 5 hours in a day during your third trimester.
  11. Use pillows for comfort: If you have a backache, try using small cushions behind your back which will ease your pain. You can also use headrest to get better sleep while traveling for long hours.
  12. Do not lean forward: During pregnancy sickness and discomfort can easily make you want to lean forward for relief. The chaining effect of the seat belt may also give rise to further discomfort and make you want to barf. But it’s best not to lean forward. What you can do is maybe loosen your seatbelt a little and sit back for better comfort and air. Turn down the windows for fresh air to cool you down. Leaning forward can lead to grave injuries to both the baby and the mother in case of an accident. You will also be able to get better benefits of the airbags in case you are leaning away from the dashboard.
  13. Use Pregnancy bumper stickers: Just like the baby on board stickers, there are also car stickers available to indicate pregnant female driving Car. This will ensure safety while driving in traffic or congested roads.
